Special About Her CHORUS What’s so special about her? Well now where should I start Should I set up a matrix Or should I make a flow chart What’s so special about her Let me count up the ways But you’ll have to be patient This could take a few days 1. Well she loves my love handles And she loves my laugh lines If I wear socks with sandals She just shrugs and says “fine” She really turns my propeller She laughs at all my tall tales And on my days in the doldrums She puts the wind in my sails 2. I’m a little bit retro Sometimes I’m full of hot air Like when I talk about Woodstock As If I’d really been there She just smiles so sweetly And takes it all in her stride I’m one lucky old cowboy To have her at my side CHORUS 3. I’m a little bit flaky Mister pie-in-the-sky All talk and no action She just lets it go by I know her old boyfriends Were better looking than me But for her I’ve got something No other woman can see 4. And when I go to my man-cave To work some more on my book And wake up around lunchtime She just gives me that look I’m her loveable loser Without silver or gold But I’ve got my own diamond To have and to hold CHORUS

BALLAD OF THE STAR-CROSSED LOVERS I want the world to know this much Her sleeves were green alright Green as the fields of England In summer’s early light Her limbs were pale and slender Her kisses warm and tender For hours did we linger in The garden of delight I want the world to know this much Her sleeves were green for sure The shade of jade from China All part of her allure Her voice was sweet as birdsong She filled the air with word-song Our spirits felt that fever For which there is no cure All through the dimming of the day And deep into the night I wooed her with my repertoire Of love songs dark and bright And she returned the favour With poems she would recite Enraptured did I listen To her sonnets dark and bright I want the world to know this much Her sleeves were green, it’s true The emerald hills of Ireland in picture-postcard hue A love that never ended Two broken hearts unmended House of Capulet opposed To House of Montague.

THE MYSTERY GIRLS Every night Yellow moon at my window A gentle sound The sandman visits my pillow Before too long I hear beckoning whispers “Come this way! Meet the Mystery Sisters” A cauldron simmers A pale light shimmers They form a ring They dance and sing The beautiful sisters of mystery Have really got a hold on me Every night I drift off on the moonbeams In the land of Nod I find a place full of strange dreams Before too long Shapes appear in the forest Voices chant A weird and wondrous chorus BRIDGE I've been dumped and ditched before But not bewitched like this before I want to try out something new Drink strange brew With the Mystery Girls My Mystery Girls A cauldron simmers A pale light shimmers They form a ring They dance and sing The beautiful sisters of mystery They’ve really got a hold on me

THEY’RE IN LOVE You can tell by the way he looks at her That he’s in love He’s in love You can tell by the way she calls his name That she’s in love She’s in love Everybody knows because it shows That they’re in love Everybody knows that’s the way it goes When you’re in love You can tell by the way he holds her hand That he’s in love He’s in love You can tell by the way she smiles at him That she’s in love She’s in love Everybody knows Because it shows that they’re in love Everybody knows that the way it goes When you’re in love BRIDGE I can’t help but stop and stare At the way they seem to walk on air I just stop, I just stop and stare You can say from today two hearts unite For they’re in love They’re in love As they go on their way our hearts delight For they’re in love They’re in love Everybody knows Because it shows that they’re in love Everybody knows that the way it goes When you’re in love Everybody knows Because it shows that they’re in love Everybody knows that the way it goes When you’re in love

Wouldn’t Be the First Time 1. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ever felt like this This wouldn’t be the first time a sweet and tender kiss has sent me up to heaven for just a little while set my mind to dreaming of walking down the aisle CHORUS If I take a moment to stop and reminisce It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ever felt like this 2. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve known love’s delight This wouldn’t be the first time my heart has taken flight and let me see the world through love’s kaleidoscope and filled my world with magic, mystery and hope CHORUS If I take a moment to stop and reminisce It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ever felt like this BRIDGE Because there’s something else about you that makes me realise that all the loves of yesterday were stardust in disguise You’re love is my true melody A sweet enchanting air meant for no one else but me the answer to my prayer 3. This wouldn’t be the first time the flames have burned so bright No this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve known love’s delight But this could be the last time for my heart says you’re the one I’m gonna spend my days with until my days are done CHORUS If I take a moment to stop and reminisce It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ever felt like this x 2

Paris Review We sipped sparking Veuve-Cliquot On that brisk October day Soaking up the ambience in Amelie’s cafe You wore your turquoise foulard I wore my black beret Two restless roving ramblers From a country far away Oh the leaves were falling gently On the graves in Père Lachaise On our journey through the tombstones We hummed La Marseillaise Surrounded by the spirit Of every tragic name Whose stories so eternal set the scene for passion’s flame. CHORUS WELL HERE’S ANOTHER LOVE SONG SET IN PARIS OF A COUPLE WHO RESEMBLE ME AND YOU YOUR MEMORIES MIGHT DIFFER ON THE DETAILS BUT I DECLARE THE STORY TO BE TRUE WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL TO SEE IT ONE DAY, IN PRINT IN THE PARIS REVIEW And Esmerelda danced for us Across Ile St. Louis And I kissed you for the first time As the bells tolled solemnly An old man with a violin Played “As Time Goes By” And we danced like Fred and Ginger Beneath a Monet sky And in the Abbey Book Shop I found a poem to share Of ill-fated wartime lovers And their bittersweet affair A girl whose laugh was music Whose eyes lit up the room A boy who marched for glory Recalling her perfume CHORUS We surrendered to the city her subtleties and charms And spent the nights together Enfolded in her arms We defied the world around us All its wickedness and strife As we hailed the flag of romance And flew the flag of life WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL TO SEE IT ONE DAY, IN PRINT IN THE PARIS REVIEW YES AND WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL TO SEE IT ONE DAY, IN PRINT IN THE PARIS REVIEW

THE UNSENT LETTER I’m on an aimless journey, stopping here and there In places unfamiliar that could be anywhere. A dog-eared book of poetry that cost me seven crowns Occupies my thoughts between the cities and the towns. A letter never sent I find within its musty covers A glimpse into the bygone lives of separated lovers “Dear Valerie, I write tonight from deep in no-man’s land We’re waiting for a signal from the generals in command The cities lie in ruins, the air is thick with smoke Shattered is the beauty of which our poet spoke His words provide some comfort to my receptive ear Despite the grieving landscape where only ghosts appear By the time this reaches you I should be homeward bound I pray the fates will play their part and keep me safe and sound” This dog-eared book of poetry that cost me seven crowns At a market stall on Sunday in a sleepy border town Has brought me here to stand before a shrine to victory Where I repeat those long-lost words to darling Valerie Oh If I had the poet’s touch, a sonnet I would write To win again the heart I’ve lost and let new love take flight

THE DUNGEON OF LOVE The widow Queen did favour me With wine and meat and bread She said that if I pleased her well One day we might be wed She shared the secrets in her heart And her table and her bed For a twelve-month and a day Such a splendid life I led Until one day arrived in court From a distant foreign land With tales of bold adventure From Seville and Samarkand A knight upon a steed of white Whose mission was my lady’s hand His gifts of silk and rubies Her heart could not withstand She quickly turned against me And ordered me to leave I uttered my endearments I tugged her velvet sleeve On my knees I pleaded Beseeched her for reprieve With a sneer upon her lips She caused my heart to grieve SINCE THAT DAY I LANGUISH HERE IN THIS DUNGEON OF DESPAIR MY HEART IS FILLED WITH ANGUISH HERE I WRING MY HANDS, I TEAR MY HAIR BEYOND ALL MEASURE IS MY PAIN AS TO MY HEART I PRESS HER GLOVE THIS PERFUMED KEEPSAKE I RETAIN IN MEMORY OF OUR RUINED LOVE OH BLIND HANGMAN, HEAR MY PLEA RELEASE ME FROM THIS MISERY SURELY EVEN YOU CAN SEE THERE’S NOTHING LEFT IN LIFE FOR ME LET THEM KNOW THIS WAS MY CHOICE AND LET THEIR TWO-BACKED BEAST REJOICE JUST LEAD ME TO YOUR GALLOWS POLE MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON MY SOUL

Florentina and Paloma In water off Tofino orcas breach Cappucino, a flaky French croissant The swooping gulls release their plaintive screech Pacific skies. Now what more could you want? Two women walk along the windswept beach An image: Santorini restaurant Florentina played the concertina As Paloma sang of tolerance and peace On that tranquil night The stars were shining bright And in your heart of darkness there was light. You were a broken spirit passing through The victim of a lover’s web of lies Such sweetness from those lips of honeydew Such wisdom in those words and sparkling eyes You found yourself among the lucky few To sing with her beneath Aegean skies Florentina played the concertina As Paloma sang of tolerance and peace On that tranquil night The stars were shining bright And in your heart of darkness there was light. An eagle now emerges from the trees Paloma’s name evokes the gentle dove In silence now it circles on the breeze How long before it swoops down from above? To carry off its limp and lifeless prey As you meander down the path of love Florentina played the concertina As Paloma sang of tolerance and peace On that tranquil night The stars were shining bright And in your heart of darkness there was light.

THE FALSE DAWN OF BELGIAN EXILE 1. Scholars make reference to René Magritte Along with beer and les moules et frites And the old bistro A LA MORT SUBITE Antwerp and Ghent too play their part For the Cold War spy with a wounded heart And a passion for Flemish and surrealist art Critics, like me, have scholarly views On whether the author was kissed by the muse To create such a work of pathos and style. Mentioned at parties, it still draws a smile The false dawn of Belgian exile 2. And we ponder at length the coquettish ways Of the woman to blame for the hero’s malaise Who toyed with his heart as she lapped up his praise. No wonder their hearts were never united His love was in vain, doomed, unrequited An existence so futile, wretched and blighted Critics, like me, have scholarly views On whether the author was kissed by the muse To create such a work of pathos and style. Mentioned at parties, it still draws a smile The false dawn of Belgian exile Bridge Monique was the name of the femme fatale Mystique and guile à la Lauren Bacall She spoke Dutch with a French accent On the train between Antwerp and Ghent 3. He wrote little of merit in the following years Abandoned by readers, dismissed by his peers The novels and poetry fell on deaf ears I saw him one day while crossing the square As the snowflakes of winter swirled in the air He danced with a woman with flames in her hair Critics, like me, have scholarly views On whether the author was kissed by the muse To create such a work of pathos and style. Mentioned at parties, it still draws a smile The false dawn of Belgian exile

SHOULD I TELL HER? Should I tell her? Should I tell her what I know about him? Should I tell her Should I tell her what I know about him? She doesn’t deserve to be treated that way She doesn’t deserve to be cheated that way Should I tell her Should I tell her what I know about him? Where I think of him my blood runs cold He turns his back on a heart of gold He just throws her love away He just throws her love away What would she do if she only knew? Of the lies, the lies, Should I put her wise? When I think of her my blood runs hot I’d give my heart and all I’ve got If she’d throw her love my way If she’d throw her love my way What would she do if she only knew? Of the lies, the lies, Should I put her wise? When I think of how he’s wrong for her When I think of how I long for her I’ve just got find a way I’ve just got to find a way What would she do if she only knew Of the lies, the lies, Should I put her wise?

LUCKY IN KENTUCKY 1. I was feeling pretty low when I left Idaho People there called me poor white trash More misery in Missouri Had to leave there in a hurry When I stole that midnight mama’s secret stash 2. I was a sad and sorry boy When I passed through Illinois I know I almost ended up in jail Had a close brush with the law In the hills of Arkansas So I caught a freight and rode out on the rail Bridge And I didn’t get no kisses From them Mississippi misses They said goodbye and left me high and dry¨ They said goodbye and left me high and dry There was nobody waiting for me When I crossed over into Tennessee So I headed north to where the grass is blue That’s where I ran smack dab into you Chorus I got lucky in Kentucky I mean hit-the-jackpot lucky Now I tell you what I’m gonna do I got lucky in Kentucky I mean hit-the-jackpot lucky I’m gonna spend my whole life here with you In Kentucky where all my dreams came true When I got to Delaware I was hungry as a bear No fish there would nibble on my line By the time I hit Ohio I was batting almost zero In my pocket just a dollar forty-nine Repeat Bridge & Double Chorus + Tag

SHE’S IN THE GROOVE 1. The List 05:42
THE LIST A woman from my distant past died earlier this year In the presence of her family and others she held dear A letter from her husband informed me she was dead “She wanted you to have this list,” was all the letter said. We were lovers in that place where lies and secrets dwell In the days of coded messages before the towers fell. She was New York to the core, a fact she liked to stress. As for my native country, she couldn’t have cared less I wander through Tribeca now, less sprightly than before Sometimes I think I see her face outside a certain door Where I gaze up at a window on the twenty-second floor And imagine her undressing as she lured me back once more. She called me Blazes Boylan, I called her Molly Bloom She left this list of memories from our abandoned room: She haunts me from beyond the grave, one last Broadway encore One final bow, a farewell wave: “all’s fair in love and war”. Making love, faking love Finding and forsaking love Building up and breaking love Enjoying and destroying love Mournful love, scornful love Resentful love, repentful love Capricious love, suspicious love Delicious love, malicious love Permissive love, submissive love Illicit love, complicit love, Conceitful love, deceitful love Jaded love, faded love … Fade away, not fade away Fade away, not fade away Fade away, not fade away (Repeat and fade … )

Together 03:53
TOGETHER No one here would call us glamorous But they sincerely call us amorous A natural pair: table, chair, We go together like fair and square The way you walk makes me delirious It’s time to talk, let’s get serious A real dream team, sugar and cream We go together like a field and stream We go, we go, we go together We go, we go, we go together Shooby dooby, to be together Shooby dooby, to be together Shooby dooby, to be together That look of love turns me to butter now You make my old heart start to flutter now There’s more to this than circumstance We go together like song and dance Your sweet voice knocks me for a loop My world spins ‘round like a dime-store hula-hoop The perfect match: itch and scratch We go together like pitch and catch We go, we go, we go together (3x) Shooby dooby, to be together Shooby dooby, to be together now Shooby dooby, to be together now When you hold me in a warm embrace you launch my heart into outer space Wine and cheese, birds and bees We go together like piano keys It feels divine when stars align I want to hold your hand in mine Side by side, poached or fried We go together like groom and bride We go, we go, we go together (3x) Shooby dooby, to be together Shooby dooby, to be together Shooby dooby, to be together

IN VINO VERITAS As the Romans said: “in vino veritas” So go ahead and pour another glass I’ll tell you all about what’s on my mind Because I had this real wild vision And it calls for a decision I’d like to know if you are so inclined So take some time to think it through In a day or two I’ll get back to you Cause maybe you’re gonna have a coupla questions We’ll sit and have a glass of wine And play old records by John Prine And work out what you think of my suggestion Let me be your homing pigeon And I’ll make you my new religion All you have to do is say the word And I’ll hop and bop like one excited bird I’ll be right here when Sunday comes If you provide some tasty crumbs I’ll stay close by, be at your beck and call I’ll leave my number right here on your wall I’ll just sit her on my perch Until you say it’s time for church That sounds darn near righteous to me In fact, I’m sure that it was meant to be And when those church bells start a-tollin’ We’ll make time for holy rollin’ There’s nothin’ more that I would rather do than build a nest and make a home for two And if you share my view of things I’ll hop and skip and flap my wings That pretty much sums up the way I feel I’m hopin’ soon that we can seal the deal. Let me be your homing pigeon And I’ll make you my new religion All you have to do is say the word And I’ll hop and bop like one excited bird As the Romans said: “in vino veritas” So go ahead and pour another glass

Afterglow 03:54

about

Is there anything more universal and timeless than romance? On this, their fourth album, The Eventually Brothers deliver a bumper crop of songs that explore the twists and turns the forces of attraction and passion can take. LOVE SONGS DARK AND BRIGHT is a musical and lyrical potpourri designed to pluck at heartstrings in a variety of ways. From joyful delight to bitter despair, this batch of songs examines just about every aspect of love imaginable. Sunny pop tunes rub shoulders with country-flavoured excursions, while folk ballads that hark back several centuries in mood and structure take their place alongside flat-out rock and roll stormers and story-songs reminiscent of the European cabaret scene. And, yes, there is even a poignant Christmas reverie for good measure. The lyrics also take the listener on an exotic journey: an island in the Agean Sea and another in the Pacific Ocean, two road trips through various American states, and an itinerary of beguiling Old World locations such as Antwerp, Ghent, Paris, Seville and Samarkand. The cast of characters is equally rich: real-life historic figures such as René Magritte, John Prine, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire come and go; on a literary note, the tragic spirits of Romeo and Juliet are evoked while Molly Bloom and Blazes Boylan turn up in New York City. And for those who prefer a dash of the supernatural, a coven of warm-hearted witches work their magic within a mysterious dreamscape. All you have to do, dear listener, is press to play!
