THE UNSENT LETTER

I’m on an aimless journey, stopping here and there
In places unfamiliar that could be anywhere.
A dog-eared book of poetry that cost me seven crowns
Occupies my thoughts between the cities and the towns.

A letter never sent I find within its musty covers
A glimpse into the bygone lives of separated lovers
“Dear Valerie, I write tonight from deep in no-man’s land
We’re waiting for a signal from the generals in command

The cities lie in ruins, the air is thick with smoke
Shattered is the beauty of which our poet spoke
His words provide some comfort to my receptive ear
Despite the grieving landscape where only ghosts appear
By the time this reaches you I should be homeward bound
I pray the fates will play their part and keep me safe and sound”

This dog-eared book of poetry that cost me seven crowns
At a market stall on Sunday in a sleepy border town
Has brought me here to stand before a shrine to victory
Where I repeat those long-lost words to darling Valerie
Oh If I had the poet’s touch, a sonnet I would write
To win again the heart I’ve lost and let new love take flight
